Sustainability starts with our fabric choices. At AMN, we believe in sourcing materials that are not only beautiful, but that also tell a story - one of heritage, responsibility, and care for the planet. Wool, especially Irish woven wool, is a cornerstone of our sustainability mission, blending tradition with innovation.
Join us as we explore what makes this fabric so remarkable and revisit one of our most-loved collaborations with IrelandsEye.
You might be wondering why we love wool so much. Wool is one of the most versatile and sustainable natural fibres and it offers so many benefits for both the wearer and for the environment. As a naturally renewable resource and a biodegradable material, wool is an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic materials. What’s more, wool is temperature-regulating. It will keep you warm in winter and cool in summer (or also warm in our Irish summers). Wool’s breathability prevents overheating, it’s durable, moisture wicking, odour resistant and requires less frequent washing over time which allows for the elevated maintenance of fabric quality. At the risk of sounding like wool’s number 1 fans (although we really are), wool is also hypoallergenic, naturally flame retardant and it provides UV protection. As more and more Irish designers are embracing traditional weaving techniques while incorporating eco-conscious practices, organizations promoting responsible wool production ensure that animal welfare, land preservation, and fair labor practices remain at the heart of the industry. The resurgence of Irish wool reflects a broader movement towards slow fashion, one that values quality, craftsmanship, and environmental responsibility over mass production and fast fashion trends - all of which is at the heart of everything we do here at Aoife Mc Namara.
This commitment to sustainability isn’t new - wool has played a vital role in Ireland’s culture and economy for centuries, shaping our economy, fashion, and cultural identity. Ireland’s unique climate and green fields provided ideal conditions for raising amazing sheep which led to the development of regional weaving traditions that remain influential today. Wool quickly became Ireland’s leading export with France and Spain importing Irish wool for their own textile industries. Despite numerous obstacles imposed by trade restrictions, Irish weavers proudly preserved their craft and continued to produce wool of the highest quality for both local and international markets. Wool has always been a symbol of Irish craftsmanship and resilience. From Aran jumpers, insulating fishing communities against the harsh Atlantic weather and whose every stitch carried meaning, be it family heritage or local folklore, to Donegal tweed, worn by farmers, fishermen, and now AMN Girls, Irish wool remains a staple in our history. At AMN, we want to ensure that our favourite material will be part of our island’s future, not just its past.
As Ireland’s first B Corp fashion brand, Aoife Mc Namara abides by Benefit Corporations standards of fabric sourcing. We always ensure that our wool meets the Responsible Wool Standard, is sourced ethically, ensuring fair wages to farmers and fair treatment of animals. Our wool is sourced from companies following regenerative practices and following low-impact dyeing and processing methods. When choosing wool, we encourage you to look beyond the label. Research the brands' sourcing practices to ensure ethical production and sustainability standards. Aoife Mc Namara is proud to source our wool from John Hanly Woollen Mills and Magee. John Hanly has operated on the banks of the Nenagh river since 1893. Their mill is powered by a water turbine that generates their own renewable electricity. Sustainability is a fundamental part of Magee 1866's ethos, developed over 150 years. The company is dedicated to reducing its environmental impact and believes in positioning the community as leaders in sustainable practices. Magee 1866 also emphasizes quality as a principal product value, ensuring that their fabrics and finished garments are durable, thereby promoting sustainability through longevity. At AMN we take immense pride in our collaboration with IrelandsEye due to their excellent sustainability standards. IrelandsEye, like Aoife Mc Namara, has achieved zero production waste, focuses on creating durable garments designed to last a lifetime, and continually refines its processes to minimise their environmental impact.
Aoife’s commitment to sustainability has enabled us to forge and sustain partnerships with forward-thinking Irish wool suppliers who share our vision for sustainability and social responsibility. Together we are advancing working conditions and reducing our environmental impact. From Magee, to John Hanly Woollen Mills, and IrelandsEye, we are proud to source from companies that are also setting a new standard for what the Irish woollen industry can achieve. Drawing from Irish heritage and traditions, we design with a deep respect for nature, creating timeless woollen pieces that blend modern innovation with the world around us. Our approach is rooted in craftsmanship, where quality is paramount and every design is an expression of beauty and purpose. Guided by a commitment to sustainability and a sense of community, we craft not just garments, but enduring legacies for the future. The collaboration between AMN and IrelandsEye is rooted in our mutual commitment to our heritage, the inspiration we derive from the natural world, and from an inexorable commitment to producing quality in an ethical and sustainable manner.
Irish wool’s rich history is a testament to the country’s enduring commitment to craftsmanship, sustainability, and cultural heritage. As consumers seek out ethical fashion choices, Irish wool continues to offer a timeless, responsible alternative that honors tradition while embracing innovation. By supporting Irish wool, we celebrate centuries of artistry and ensure the survival of one of Ireland’s most treasured industries for future generations.
P.S. Keep your eyes peeled for another AMN x IrelandsEye collaboration very soon!!
